Wes Wilson urges tighter control of fugitive methane Wes Wilson is an environmental engineer who worked for the EPA’s Regional Office in Denver for over 35 years

PSU study shows global methane emissions from fossil fuel production are increasing The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found evidence that methane emissions from gas and oil extraction increased significantly between 1984 and 2009.

Rice and his team, which included PSU researchers Chris Butenhoff, Doaa Teamaa, Florian Rogera, and Aslam Khalil, and OHSU researcher Reinhold Rasmussen, analyzed the isotopic composition of atmospheric methane in archived air samples collected between 1977 – 1998 from Oregon and other sites around the world and then modeled them with contemporary data to infer changes in methane sources from 1984 – 2009. They concluded the methane emissions from fossil fuel sectors (including gas, oil and coal) were stable in the 1980s and 1990s but increased from 2000-2009.
