The Story of the Second Greenhouse Gas – CH4
- Tracking the cause of things happening too early:
- Methane is producing a larger impact on climate than people have been anticipating and we'll show how the previous chart should show that..
- The light blue area is the interesting one – methane. It is added to the GHG strength by converting to CO2e using “GWP” (Global Warming Potential).
- Even though we have a critical need to be nearly done with GHG emissions, the inappropriate GWP conversion factor measures impact 100 years from now.
- Note that in the orange area there is CO2 from burned methane, too. That is the correctly delivered end product. The light blue area is the fugitive methane lost to the atmosphere instead of being delivered as a product. Only it is delivered to the atmosphere AS METHANE, and therefore needs the application of the GWP multiplier to make it have equivalence to CO2 – called CO2e.
